The new generation of designer lodge for gorilla trekking. Bisate is close to Kinigi gate but feels part of the majestic Volcanoes National Park, sitting in its own caldera looking out to Mount Bisoke

Bisate Lodge clings to the inside of a natural amphitheatre, the caldera left over from a volcanic cone, looking west into the Volcanoes National Park. The mountain shields the lodge from any light or sign of civilisation from nearby Kinigi, so that guests have a real wilderness sensation even in camp. The view is pure magic. Mount Bisoke rises 3,700m in centre stage with 4,500m Karisimbi, the highest in the range and the Congo’s Mount Mikeno adding to the spectacular skyline.

The flora and fauna all around are pretty much unique to the park. The six volcanoes of the Virunga Massif are home to bamboo thickets, Hagenia forests and a great range of butterflies, birdlife and mammals. There are thirteen habituated families of Silverback Gorillas which can be tracked and observed from Bisate. This experience is enriched for guests by in-depth presentations from the on-site researcher and/or scientist, who will also happily share his or her knowledge over a beer at the bar.

The lodge’s singular design is derived from Rwandan building tradition, the spherical thatched structures resembling the Royal Palace. Interiors are detailed with a variety of woven screens and textured finishes, strewn with rugs and heated by a central fireplace.

Days are spent trekking in search of the mountain gorilla. Expeditions can last from between 2 and 8 hours over fairly steep terrain but, if you can find them, the hour spent with these amazing charismatic animals will last in your memory a lifetime. Nature walks, community visits, film screenings and wine tastings add to guests’ enjoyment and help to put in context the profound experience you will enjoy at Bisate.

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, a 15 minutes’ drive will bring you to a venue in the city for a ‘Welcome Chat’.
Guests will then travel by helicopter or 4×4 to the lodge.
